Charles City Release Custody Map
Charles City County released inmates do not come from a facility called the Charles City County Jail. The Charles City County Sheriff handles law enforcement and court execution, but official sources do not identify that office as a jail operator. Riverside Regional Jail Authority, or RRJA, serves Charles City and six other member localities. A Charles City arrest can therefore lead to confinement at Riverside Regional Jail in North Prince George. The county name follows the case. The regional-jail name follows the physical custody.
Leaving Riverside Regional Jail has several meanings. Bond, recognizance, dismissal, time served, sentence completion, or a release order may return a person to the community. A transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections begins state custody. A federal or immigration detainer can end RRJ custody while another authority takes control at once. Movement to the RRJA Pre-Release Center may be a change in placement, not the end of the sentence. Each claim must identify the custodian that released the person and what happened next.
Charles City Release Types Explained
A release label describes a legal or custody event, not always freedom from all restraint. Charles City County release records should be read with the related court and receiving-agency records. The same date may be a transfer date for RRJA, an admission date for VADOC, and neither the final discharge date nor the end of supervision.
| Release type | Meaning | Next reliable source |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | Pretrial release under court terms | Charles City court and RRJ record |
| Time served or completion | Active local time was satisfied as calculated | RRJ record and sentencing order |
| Parole | Prison release with continuing supervision | VADOC locator, release papers, and Parole Board report |
| Probation | Court-ordered community supervision, sometimes after confinement | Court order and VADOC District 34 |
| Transfer or detainer | One custody ended while another began | RRJ record and receiving agency |
| Dismissal | A charge ended, but another hold may remain | Certified court record plus custody proof |
“Discharge” can mean the sentence or supervision has fully ended, but agencies may use it differently. “Released on parole” means the person left prison while remaining under legal supervision. “Not in BOP custody” speaks only to the Bureau of Prisons. Precise labels prevent a transfer, court disposition, or database absence from becoming an unsupported claim of release.
Charles City Release Record Fields
A Charles City County release record should answer who was held, which custody ended, when it ended, and what followed. RRJA does not promise every useful field in a public profile. Its locator is current-custody only, and its FAQ says release information is not given to the public. Ask for identifiable existing fields “if maintained” rather than asking staff to create a new report.
| Requested field | What it can show |
|---|---|
| Full name and record identifier | Connects the event to the correct jail admission |
| Booking or admission date | Defines the custody episode |
| Holding facility and jurisdiction | Separates RRJ custody from the Charles City case |
| Release date and time | Records when RRJ custody ended, if maintained |
| Disposition or release type | Distinguishes community release from transfer |
| Destination or receiving agency | Identifies the next custodian when recorded |
| Associated booking photograph | Documents intake identity, not release by itself |
A court record answers a different question. A bond order, dismissal, sentence, appeal, or revocation can explain legal authority, yet its date may not be the door-out time. Another warrant, charge, detainer, appeal, or transfer may still hold the person. Certified clerk records control over informational online entries, while the RRJ custody record is more direct proof of the actual jail event.
Request Charles City Release Records
Direct the request to the office that created the record. RRJA holds Riverside Regional Jail booking and custody records. Charles City County and the Sheriff may hold county arrest or process records. Court clerks hold judicial files. VADOC, BOP, ICE, and USMS each control their own custody information. Sending one broad request to Charles City will not automatically obtain an independent regional-jail record.
- Identify the person by full name, date of birth if known, and booking or date range.
- Email RRJA FOIA or write Lt. C. Jones, Office of Professional Review, 500 FOLAR Trail, North Prince George, VA 23860.
- Ask for existing booking and release or disposition records, including date, time, type, destination, and the adult intake photo if maintained.
- Request electronic copies, redaction of exempt fields instead of total withholding, and a cost estimate before work exceeds a stated limit.
- Send county-held requests through the Charles City FOIA channel by email, mail, fax, phone, in person, or its optional form.
Virginia FOIA does not require a special form or the word “FOIA.” It requires a reasonably specific request for existing records. The agency need not answer a question or create a report. A response may state that records do not exist, identify another known custodian, or produce nonexempt parts with redactions. Keeping the request narrow helps the custodian locate the correct admission and avoids mixing jail, court, and state records.
Virginia Release Records Law
Virginia Code § 2.2-3704 governs eligible requesters’ access to public records. The custodian normally must respond within five working days by producing records, citing a basis to withhold, producing and redacting, stating that records were not found, or invoking an allowed extension. The ordinary extension is seven additional workdays. Charges may cover actual access, search, supplies, and duplication. A deposit can be required when expected cost exceeds $200.
Criminal, juvenile, victim-protected, investigatory, sealed, and expunged material may be restricted. Effective July 1, 2026, § 2.2-3706 created a request path for an adult routine initial-intake booking photograph, subject to limits including temporary withholding when release could jeopardize a felony investigation. That statute does not require RRJA to create a public gallery or make a photograph proof that a release occurred.
RRJA publishes no retention period for a released-person profile because it does not publish such an archive. Do not borrow the court system’s Current, Archived, and All divisions as a jail retention rule. A missing record may reflect a spelling issue, system limits, sealing, or expungement. The controlling record and the law effective on the event date must be checked.
Charles City Sealed Release Records
Virginia’s separate sealing chapter took effect July 1, 2026. Another version of § 19.2-392.2 takes effect December 1, 2026. Those dates matter. A rule that is not yet effective cannot be applied early, and an explanation should be dated when the law changes. Sealing and expungement can lawfully limit government dissemination, so disappearance from a public search may not reveal the reason.
Expungement and sealing also do not rewrite every system in the same way or prove that every lawful copy held elsewhere vanished. Ask the relevant Charles City clerk or custodian about the authoritative file. Do not try to infer a sealed case from rumor, an old photograph, or a blank result. The safest statement is that the named system returned no public result on the date checked.
Note: A roster absence, sealed case, and completed discharge are distinct findings and should never be treated as interchangeable.
Find Charles City Released Inmates
The full search path follows the custody chain rather than one database. Start with the secure RRJA locator gateway. A matching result supports current Riverside Regional Jail custody. An absent name means only that the current search did not return the person. It can reflect release, transfer, lag, another jail, identity variation, or a custody event not shown there.
- Search the current RRJ locator and note the time, spelling, and identifiers used.
- Check Virginia VINE for a release, transfer, death, or escape event. The event label controls.
- Search Charles City court records for bond, disposition, sentence, appeal, and revocation entries.
- Use the VADOC locator if state commitment or community supervision is possible.
- Use BOP, the federal docket, or ICE only when the case involves that custody layer.
- Request the RRJ release record when online results cannot prove the event.
Older General District entries may require the legacy search’s Archived or All control. Circuit court handles felony adjudication and appeals, while General District records can show misdemeanors, bond history, and preliminary felony steps. Juvenile and protected family matters are not ordinary public OCIS results. A court disposition explains the legal case but does not replace physical custody evidence.
VADOC Charles City Release Search
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers state institutions and current community supervision. Search with the first three letters of the first name and full last name, or use the seven-digit DOC ID. Optional filters include location, race, gender, and age range. The system warns that data are updated daily. A District Office location may confirm that physical prison custody ended while supervision continues.
| Field | Use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| First and last name | Finds likely records | Same-name people require identifier checks |
| Seven-digit DOC ID | Provides the strongest public search key | It belongs only to the VADOC record |
| Location | Separates an institution from a District Office | Daily updates can lag an event |
| Custody or supervision status | Shows current VADOC relationship | No hit is not a lifetime discharge record |
The exact public release-date label on a live VADOC result was not confirmed in the research. Do not claim a field the current screen does not show. A VADOC release packet can include an Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole. Those signed and dated documents, a VADOC records response, and an applicable court or Parole Board record provide stronger long-term proof.
The official locator screen shows the documented name, DOC ID, filter, and update controls. Review the current VADOC search interface before relying on a result.
The captured screen supports the available search inputs, but it does not turn a missing result into proof of discharge.
Charles City Release Court Search
The Sheriff, Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations functions share the Courthouse Road campus. Physical detention occurs at RRJ in another county. That geography explains why one office cannot answer every Charles City County released inmate question. Select the court based on case level, and select RRJA based on physical regional-jail custody.
Virginia’s Online Case Information System can be searched by defendant, court or locality, case number, and refinements. It can show the case, charge, hearing dates, appeal, disposition, and service information. General District’s Current, Archived, and All options help with older entries. A signed or certified clerk record controls if the online display and official file differ.
The court screen documents the locality and archive choices. Open the official General District court selector to verify the current options.
These controls support case research after a live jail name disappears, but only custody evidence establishes the completed release.
When Does RRJ Release People?
RRJA does not publish release dates to the general public. The incarcerated person receives the date and is expected to communicate plans. No official gate schedule, pickup zone, or public release hour was found. Visitation materials prohibit parking-lot loitering, so family members should obtain direct instructions and should not wait at the facility without them.
This policy makes a records-first approach important. The RRJ FAQ points people to the facility when its current locator does not answer a question, but the phone line should not be presented as a promise of advance release details. Ask which office accepts a request for an already completed custody event. Then obtain the record when exact time, type, or transfer destination matters.
Note: A VINE alert time may reflect agency data transmission and should not be restated as the exact doorway time.
Getting Home After RRJ Release
Riverside Regional Jail sits in North Prince George, not Charles City. That distance affects pickup and travel planning. A Petersburg Area Transit page preserves a dated 2020 notice that Riverside Jail service was available “upon request.” The wording is historical, not a current ride guarantee. Call Petersburg Area Transit at (804) 733-2450 before relying on any route or pickup arrangement.
RRJA has not published a release transportation schedule. VADOC’s separate statewide prison-release process may arrange approved pickup or public transportation for people leaving a VADOC institution, but that rule cannot be applied to RRJ. Confirm the releasing agency, approved pickup plan, and current service directly. A family’s expected release date can move because a court order, warrant, detainer, or transfer still needs review.
RRJ Property Before Release
RRJ has a distinctive during-custody property rule. During the first 15 days of confinement, only keys and bank cards are eligible for outside pickup, and pickup is by appointment. After that period, the incarcerated person must ask to have all non-clothing property mailed together at personal expense. Partial property releases are not allowed under the published FAQ policy.
This rule does not establish what the facility hands over at the release gate. It should not be converted into a promise about discharge property, identification, cash, or timing. Ask RRJ for current instructions tied to the person’s status. If a move to the Pre-Release Center or another program is involved, determine whether it is a custody placement rather than completed release.
Charles City Release Reentry Resources
RRJA publishes a regional reentry directory and documents a Riverside Regional Jail Reentry Council. The directory includes the Charles City Health Department at 7501 Adkins Road and points to 211 and 988 navigation. Historical RRJA reports also describe a referral network and a 90-to-120-day pre-release addictions program for eligible participants. These are contacts and program history, not guaranteed enrollment or benefits.
Current eligibility and availability should be confirmed with RRJA. Community supervision is separate: Williamsburg Probation and Parole District 34 serves Charles City adults under VADOC authority. A person can be out of prison while remaining in the VADOC locator under a District Office. The Charles City probation and parole page explains how to distinguish that status from full discharge.
Charles City Release Alerts
Virginia VINE covers all Virginia local and regional jails, including RRJ. Search by full or partial name or offender ID when offered, select the matching person and facility, and read the event label. Release, transfer, escape, and death are not interchangeable. Register before the event when possible because VINE is a current status and notification system, not a permanent release archive.
VADOC victim notification is a separate process. A VINE registration for local jail custody does not automatically follow a transfer into state custody. For a federal case, the BOP Locator can show a past Release Date and released or not-in-BOP-custody status, but that finding does not rule out another custodian or supervision. ICE’s locator covers current detainees and certain people released from ICE custody within 60 days; its term “release” can include removal, transfer, or supervision.
- Parole
- Release from prison with continuing legal supervision.
- Probation
- Court-ordered community supervision that may follow or replace active confinement.
- Discharge
- Completion of custody or supervision, subject to the agency’s exact usage.
- Detainer
- A request or hold that can move a person directly to another authority.
Charles City Release Facilities
The facility map reflects systems that can actually hold or supervise a person tied to Charles City. Riverside Regional Jail is the primary regional detention route. Its Pre-Release Center is a component or modality, not a proven separate jail. VADOC institutions apply after state commitment. BOP institutions apply only to a federal case.
- Riverside Regional Jail: community release, program placement, or transfer is confirmed through RRJ, VINE, the court, and any receiving agency.
- RRJA Pre-Release Center: reduced-custody or community-corrections placement is checked through RRJA and the governing order.
- Virginia Department of Corrections institutions, statewide: supervision or discharge is checked through VADOC records and the court.
- Federal Bureau of Prisons institutions, nationwide: a BOP release result is reconciled with the federal docket and any receiving authority.
Charles City is one of seven RRJA member localities. Regional governance explains why there is no Charles City-branded jail roster and why RRJA is the custodian for regional booking and release records. The Charles City Sheriff remains the proper route for county-created law-enforcement records, not RRJA’s independent files.
