Federal Bureau of Prisons Release Search

To find someone released from a Federal Bureau of Prisons institution, use the nationwide BOP record only when a federal case is involved. An ordinary Charles City arrest belongs in the regional-jail and Virginia court systems, not the federal locator. A past BOP Release Date can show that BOP custody ended, but it cannot prove freedom from another custodian or from federal supervision. Federal dockets, BOP records, and any receiving-agency record help distinguish prison release, transfer, supervision, and a later change in custody.

BOP Charles City Release Scope

Federal Bureau of Prisons institutions are nationwide and are relevant to Charles City only when a person has a federal case or federal sentence. The BOP does not operate the local jail. Riverside Regional Jail handles the usual regional detention path for Charles City, and VADOC handles Virginia prison sentences. Using the correct system avoids treating a federal no-hit as evidence about local or state custody.

BOP public records generally cover federal inmates from 1982 forward. A result may show a past Release Date and a released or not-in-BOP-custody status. That statement is limited to BOP. The person could have entered another federal process, state or local custody, immigration custody, or community supervision. A federal sentence can also involve prerelease placement or supervision that the prison locator does not fully explain.

Search BOP Charles City Releases

Open the official BOP Inmate Locator. Search by BOP, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when one is known. A name search can be refined with age, race, and sex. Compare the register number and identity fields before using a result. Same-name records and agency-specific identifiers must not be merged without a connecting source.

  1. Confirm that the underlying matter is federal.
  2. Search by the strongest available federal number or by name.
  3. Compare name, register number, age, race, and sex as lawfully available.
  4. Read the Location and Release Date fields exactly as displayed.
  5. Check the federal docket and any later receiving custodian.
  6. Request BOP records when public fields do not answer the custody question.

A past date is stronger than a mere name absence, but it still addresses only the agency that created it. Note the access date because sentence calculations can change. The BOP explains that recalculation, including First Step Act credits, may alter dates.

Important: “Released from BOP custody” does not mean released from all custody or free of federal supervision.

BOP Release Result Fields

The public BOP result can show the person’s name, register number, age, race, sex, Release Date, and Location. Those fields establish the identity and BOP status represented by the federal database. They do not provide the full federal docket, supervised-release conditions, a later state warrant, or every transfer after BOP custody.

BOP’s locator records explanation supplies the coverage and interpretation boundaries. Record the displayed wording rather than translating it into a broader claim. A future date is projected and can change. A past date supports the end of BOP custody. A no-hit may reflect pre-1982 custody, spelling, identity mismatch, or a person held by a different federal authority.

The official search image documents the name and number routes. Review the live BOP locator for the current fields.

BOP Release Record Confirmation

For durable proof, request existing federal records that identify the person, sentence, facility, and release or transfer. BOP controls its incarceration records. The federal court controls its docket and judgment. Probation records may document supervised release, subject to access limits. Each record should stay tied to the question it can answer.

A federal judgment can establish the sentence and supervision ordered, but it may not show the exact time BOP released the person. The locator can show the federal Release Date, but it may not identify all conditions afterward. A receiving state or local record is needed if another authority took custody. Build the timeline in event order instead of selecting one date as the whole story.

Release Date
The date shown for BOP custody, subject to the locator’s limits.
Supervised release
Federal court-ordered supervision after prison.
Transfer
Movement to another custodian rather than return to the community.
Register number
The federal identifier used to match the BOP record.

USMS Federal Release Records

The United States Marshals Service manages federal pretrial detention and transport. It does not provide a general historical released-person locator like BOP. A person in federal pretrial custody may be housed under contract and may never appear as a sentenced BOP prisoner in the way a reader expects.

Search the federal docket for detention, bond, commitment, sentencing, and transfer orders. Use USMS FOIA for existing prisoner-tracking or custody records when needed. Give the person’s identity, relevant date range, and preferred format. Ask for the specific custody or transfer record, not an unsourced conclusion that the person was released.

An order granting bond still needs execution evidence if the exact physical release matters. A USMS transfer can end one placement and continue federal custody elsewhere. Separate the court authorization, Marshals movement, and later BOP admission or release in the final account.

ICE and Federal Release Differences

Immigration custody is separate from BOP even when an INS number appears among federal search options. The ICE Online Detainee Locator accepts a nine-digit A-number plus country of birth, or exact name, date of birth, and country. Leading zeros may be needed. Official information says it covers current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the last 60 days, while excluding those under 18.

An ICE no-result has several possible explanations: spelling mismatch, a release older than the window, another custodian, or excluded data. ICE “release” can describe removal, transfer, supervision, or another disposition. It must not be restated as return to Charles City. If RRJ ended custody because of an immigration detainer, connect the RRJ transfer record to the ICE event before describing what happened.

Note: The ICE 60-day window belongs only to ODLS and is not a retention rule for RRJ, VADOC, or BOP.

Federal Release Versus Virginia Release

A Charles City case can touch more than one system, but most ordinary county charges do not become federal cases. Search RRJ for current regional-jail custody and request RRJA records for a completed RRJ event. Search VADOC for a Virginia prison sentence or state community supervision. Search BOP only for federal prison custody. Search ICE only when immigration custody is plausible.

The Charles City released inmate lookup covers this full sequence. If a person leaves RRJ for BOP, the RRJ record should name the federal destination if maintained, while the BOP record should establish federal custody or release. If a BOP release is followed by state custody, the state record supplies the next event. Never use absence in one database to fill a gap in another.

BOP Release Date Changes

A displayed federal release date may change through sentence recalculation and credits, including qualifying First Step Act credits. Court amendments, detainers, and administrative review can also affect the route out of custody. A future BOP date is therefore a projection, not an actual release record.

When dates differ, label the judgment date, projected Release Date, transfer date, completed BOP release date, and supervision start separately. Do not average them. Note which source created each date and when it was accessed. If another authority immediately assumed custody, state that BOP custody ended while the next custody began.

BOP Nationwide Facility Contact

This facility-map entry covers BOP institutions nationwide, not one prison in Charles City County. No federal prison was identified within Charles City. The correct institution address and records office depend on the matching BOP result. Use the official Location field and then the BOP facility directory rather than inventing a local address.

That national scope is materially different from Riverside Regional Jail and VADOC. RRJ serves Charles City regional detention from North Prince George. VADOC manages Virginia institutions and District 34 supervision. BOP controls federal prison records. The federal court and USMS cover other parts of the federal custody process. Direct every request to the office that created the record.
